Application of Battery Energy Storage Systems for Primary Frequency Control in Power Systems with High Renewable Energy Penetration

In power systems, high renewable energy penetration generally results in conventional synchronous generators being displaced. Hence, the system inertia reduces, thus causing a larger frequency deviation when an imbalance between load and generation occurs, potential instability. The problem associated with this increase system’s dynamic response can be addressed by various means, for example, flywheels, supercapacitors, battery storage systems (BESSs). This paper investigates application of BESSs primary control very energy, consequently, low levels generation. By re-creating major Australian separation event then subsequently simulating under conditions but providing support, it has been demonstrated that droop-controlled BESS greatly improve response, producing both faster reaction smaller deviation. Furthermore, is shown via detailed investigation how factors such as available capacity droop coefficient impact characteristics, guidance on best to mitigate future generator retirements. It intended analysis could beneficial determining optimal value manage stability risks penetrations.
